R&D Medical Device Engineer

Our client an Irish Med tech company is currently seeking an R&D Engineer to join their team. Reporting to the NPD Director, an exciting new role for a Medical Device Engineer to join a dynamic and growing R&D department who are the leaders in their field.

This role will see the right candidate exploring, creating, and developing medical devices from early-stage development to final stage commercialisation. Innovation backed by engineering and scientific research is the cornerstone of this role and client have flexibility around the level they could consider for this opportunity


  • Identifies and develops projects for company.
  • Explore, create and develop innovative devices/ideas/concepts for a range of healthcare conditions.
  • Design development, prototyping, test method design, design evaluation, design reviews, design specifications, design verification and validation, design protocols and reports and transfer to production activities.
  • Product testing and evaluation, completion of test reports to support design selection.
  • Preparation and presentation of design reviews.
  • Product and project risk analysis and risk management.
  • Researching new ideas, technologies and materials by;
- Working within the NPD/R&D Department to identify opportunities and projects.

- Work closely with Key Opinion Leaders (KOL’s) and healthcare professionals to develop innovative medical devices to improve and enhance patient care.

- Working with Sales Teams to identify new projects.
  • Managing project schedules, conducting product and project risk analysis, and ensuring successful and timely completion of project activities
  • Manage and drive project tasks to ensure timely completion and alignment to the companies goals.
  • Attending relevant healthcare events to ensure knowledge and understanding is up to date and seeking opportunities or gaps in the healthcare market.
  • Patent research and IP opportunities for new concepts.
  • Communicate all information regarding project status, costing, and results to all appropriate individuals, maintaining confidentiality requirements.
  • Collaborate as a key team member across the NPD/R&D department, contributing innovative ideas and expertise.
  • Carries out field visits with Business Development Managers and senior managers to get a good understanding of our customers wants and needs regarding new product development.
  • Fully understand direct competitors and new developments by our competitors or potential competitors.
  • Complete research and evidence analysis as part of the evaluations of new projects.
  • Working with key customers and KOLs with a view of building a strong resource network of clinicians to help identify or assist with the development of new projects
  • Communicating and interacting across all divisions, such as Finance, L&D, Marketing and Sales to ensure a successful launch.
  • Work with the relevant regulatory bodies or regulatory consultants to ensure the correct process and procedures are carried out for the launch of a new product.
  • To ensure all specifications and costing information is checked routinely and is factually correct prior to go to market planning or market launch.
  • Successfully delivers new product assignments using strong project management principles and effective stakeholder management.
  • Provides regular project status updates and reports as needed.
  • Is fully aware of and aligned to commercial strategies.

  • Qualified to degree level in either PhD, MSc, MA, MEng, BA, BEng or BSc Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, Product or Innovation Engineering.
  • 5 years previous experience already in the Medical Device sector (R&D), with full design and development experience.
  • A real passion and drive for research & development.
  • Proven experience as a Product Design Engineer or Mechanical Engineer in the area of medical devices.
  • Show strong innovation and creative thinking in their work and have demonstrated an ability to conduct exploration of subject areas for novel concepts and approaches.
  • Strong examples shown and experience in developing medical devices from early-stage concept development through to final market stage.
  • Fully experienced in AutoCAD and 3D modelling software.
  • Demonstrated analytical problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent team work and communication skills.
  • A thorough understanding of medical device quality & regulatory systems and medical device directives.
  • Demonstrates high levels of motivation and enthusiasm.
  • Can demonstrate excellent Project management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within strict cost / time parameters.
  • Has a proven track record of presenting and influencing at senior level.
  • Shows good commercial awareness and experience in dealing with costings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional awareness of detail through all the stages of processes of research & development.
  • Can make decisions and manage effectively within a fast paced and changing environment.
  • Has the flexibility and desire to travel regularly within Ireland, UK and International. Is prepared to attend exhibitions and conferences outside normal office hours.
  • Full driving license essential.
